Angle of View Calculation

Angle of View (AoV) describes the angular extent of a scene captured by a camera. It is represented by the lowercase Greek symbol for alpha – α. The formula for calculating the AoV is written as follows where d = the diagonal dimension of a camera's image sensor and f = the focal length of the lens.

Validating this formula can be easily accomplished by comparing calculated AoV values against those provided by lens manufacturers for example:

  • Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L – Given AoV 114° – Calculated AoV 114.182°
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 – Given AoV 46° – Calculated AoV 46.793°
  • Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L – Given AoV 6°10' – Calculated AoV 6.191° or 6°11'
